Glass Internet Connection
I was wondering if Glass needs an permanent internet connection or not for it to work. If this is the case are there certain features that work without an Wi/Fi connection to your smatphone? Can someone tell me what features need an internet connection and which do not? Also does Glass have a built in GPS system that can act as a standalone without having to pair it with a smartphone? Thanks in advance!

As with every device you will have some features that need updating after a period of time, so hence you will need a connection . Google glass is no different . More that likely you will have some application that is able to provide GPS navigation . The beauty about the Google is not that it is able to browse , but the concept of having glass to do all these functional activity as computer , tablet or smartphone would do.

This is a really good question. Is Google Glass made to use internet as you would with data on a cell phone? It would be really difficult to use with only wifi though. While there is wifi virtually everywhere, it also would make Google Glass more susceptible to hackers and viruses. Hopefully wifi is not the only option.

I was thinking of this earlier this day. I think it will use hotspots or tethering. Maybe there will be a version that uses cellular data?

I would assume you could tether it to your phone and use the data, that would be the most logical way to go about internet usage.

You can tether it to your phone, I know I read that somewhere. You can also connect it to WiFi if you don't want to use your mobile data.

I think the biggest limiting factor to Glass connectivity is the lack of Wi Fi in many areas. Data plans with a reasonable amount of data can be fairly expensive and if you go over your usage they charge an arm and a leg up here in Canada.

After the XE9 update you can connect your Glass device to your smartphone using Bluetooth. It will drain far less battery life. As for the data usage, it depends now. For instance navigation apps use a very small amount of bandwidth. I can imagine you guys will not download full length movies using your smartphone for Glass...

For applications with limited bandwidth, maybe Google will negotiate a deal with the providers to provide cellular data at no cost to the users?
It might seem a bit far fetched but Amazon did it for Kindle.
I can download books and even surf the internet (sort of) on my old fashioned non-Fire Kindle for free.
Of course the Kindle browser is so clunky and limited nobody will want to use it except for the most basic and brief interactions.
But certain Google Glass applications will be low bandwidth as well (e.g. navigation) so perhaps....?

What I would like to see is the glasses having internet from that project Google started quite a while ago, the one with the wireless internet from the balloons project.
